Taking a leap at 54 ...

There comes a moment in life when comfort and curiosity start having a conversation.

For many people, that conversation happens in their thirties or forties. For me, it happened at 54.

Changing jobs at this stage of life is a little like deciding to jump into a swimming pool without first checking the temperature. You know it will be cold for a moment, but you also know that once you're in, you'll probably wonder why you waited so long. After years of working in one industry, I made the decision to step into a completely different sector. New products, new terminology, new colleagues, new systems, and an entirely different company culture. In other words: I voluntarily became "the new guy" again.

And honestly? That's both exciting and terrifying.

One of the biggest challenges is leaving behind the comfort of experience. In your previous role, people came to you with questions because you knew the answers. Suddenly, you're the one asking where the coffee machine is, what all the abbreviations mean, and why everyone seems to understand conversations that sound like a foreign language.

It's a humbling experience. But there's something incredibly refreshing about it as well. Learning again keeps your mind sharp. Every day brings new discoveries, new skills, and new perspectives. Instead of repeating yesterday, you're building tomorrow. That feeling is difficult to describe until you experience it yourself. Of course, there are doubts.

"Am I too old for this?" "Can I still learn everything?" "What if I made the wrong decision?"

Those questions are perfectly normal. They tend to appear around three o'clock in the morning when your brain decides it would like to organize a meeting without inviting the rest of you.

The funny thing is that age often turns out to be your biggest advantage. Experience doesn't disappear just because you change industries.

You still know how to solve problems. You still know how to work with people. You still know how to stay calm when things become chaotic.

And perhaps most importantly, you've already learned that not every problem is actually a disaster. Sometimes it's simply Tuesday.

One of the most exciting parts of this new adventure is being involved in an upcoming new-build project. There's something special about helping create something from the ground up. Instead of walking into a finished story, you get to help  write the first chapters. Every lesson learned over the years suddenly becomes valuable again. Ideas that worked before can inspire new solutions. Mistakes from the past become wisdom for the future. Your experience isn't baggage. It's your toolbox.

Will everything go perfectly? Probably not. There will be moments of uncertainty, days when everything feels unfamiliar, and occasions when you'll accidentally use the old company's terminology in a meeting. It happens. Smile, laugh about it, and keep moving forward. Growth has never been comfortable. If it were, everyone would do it.

Changing careers at 54 isn't about proving that you're still young. It's about proving that you're never too old to keep growing. It's about choosing curiosity over comfort. Adventure over routine. Possibility over predictability.

Every new beginning starts with a single decision to leave something familiar behind.

So here's to new colleagues, new challenges, new lessons, and the occasional awkward first day. Here's to building something meaningful. Here's to discovering that experience and enthusiasm make an excellent team.

And here's to finding out that sometimes the biggest opportunities arrive exactly when you think life has already settled into its routine.

Because the truth is simple.

You're never starting from scratch.

You're starting with experience.

And that makes all the difference.
