Slàinte to truthful moments
Published 14 August 2026
"Slàinte Mhath."
"To your good health."
There are two simple Gaelic words that somehow carry far more meaning than the toast itself. They celebrate life, friendship, gratitude, and those rare moments when time decides to slow down. For me, those moments begin with a single dram.
Not just any whisky. An Islay. Bold. Smoky. Peaty. Untamed. A whisky that carries the spirit of the Atlantic Ocean, the scent of ancient peat bogs, the whisper of sea spray, and the stories of generations who understood that the finest things in life cannot be rushed.
"Céad Míle Fáilte"—a hundred thousand welcomes, as the Irish would say.
Every pour feels exactly like that. A warm welcome home. As the seasons gently pass, one ritual remains unchanged.
I step onto the veranda, glass in hand, while Brutus, our faithful wood-burning stove, roars to life. The crackling flames dance behind the glass, filling the room with a comforting warmth that reaches far beyond the body. It settles quietly in the soul. Outside, the garden rests in peaceful silence. Sometimes the leaves sway softly in the evening breeze. Sometimes rain gently taps against the windows. Sometimes the world simply stands still.
The garden has become more than a view. It is a sanctuary. A place where nature reminds me that stillness is never empty—it is full of life.
"May the road rise to meet you."
Those beautiful Irish words often drift through my thoughts. Not because I am travelling anywhere. But because every quiet evening feels like a journey inward.
There was a time when these evenings included a fine cigar. The slow rhythm. The rich aroma. The familiar ritual. Recently, I chose to leave that chapter behind. Surprisingly, nothing important was lost. The silence became clearer. The whisky became more expressive. The fire burned just as warmly.
Sometimes letting go creates space for something even more meaningful. The smoke that once curled from a cigar now rises only from the peat within the whisky and the glowing logs inside Brutus. It is enough. More than enough.
The smoky embrace of an Islay malt carries something almost ancient. Each sip tells a story. Of rugged coastlines. Of lonely lighthouses standing firm against Atlantic storms. Of fishermen returning home through sea mist. Of weathered distilleries where patience is measured not in days, but in decades.
The peat speaks a language older than words.
"Aye..."
Sometimes that single Scottish expression says everything.
This is home. This is peace. This is where the noise of everyday life finally fades into the background. The warmth of the fire. The gentle glow reflecting across the room. The rich amber color swirling inside the glass. The quiet beauty of the garden. Everything invites me to breathe a little deeper.
To think a little slower. To simply be. In those moments I find myself reconnecting with something that often disappears in the rush of modern life. Myself.
Thoughts arrive without invitation. Some stay only briefly. Others linger. Old memories surface beside new dreams. Questions quietly become answers. The silence never feels lonely. It feels alive.
Creative ideas begin to unfold almost effortlessly. A single sentence becomes a paragraph. A paragraph becomes a story. A passing emotion transforms into a poem. Words appear as naturally as sparks rising from Brutus into the evening air. Writing has become my way of preserving those moments. Capturing feelings that otherwise would disappear with the night.
Perhaps that is the true magic of whisky. Not the alcohol. Not the age statement. Not even the remarkable craftsmanship behind every bottle. Its greatest gift is permission. Permission to pause. Permission to reflect. Permission to listen to thoughts that are too often drowned out by the endless noise of everyday life.
"There's nae hurry."
There is no hurry.
Scotland has always seemed to understand that wisdom. Good whisky cannot be hurried. Neither can life. The finest drams wait patiently for years before revealing their character. Perhaps people are not so different.
As the evening slowly deepens, the fire settles into glowing embers. The glass grows lighter. The stars quietly appear above the garden. A peaceful silence wraps itself around the house like a familiar old blanket. I smile. Raise the final sip toward the dancing flames. And whisper once more...
"Slàinte Mhath."
Not simply as a toast. But as gratitude.
For the warmth. For the peace. For Brutus. For stories still waiting to be written.
And for those rare evenings when the world finally grows quiet enough to hear your own soul speaking.
Or, as William Butler Yeats said earlier;
Níl aon strainséirí anseo; ach cairde nach bhfuil tú tar éis bualadh leo fós.
There are no strangers here; only friends I haven't yet met
