The feeling of missing you...

The Day Time Stood Still

There are moments in life that quietly become part of who you are. And then there are moments that change who you are forever.
Some dates become part of your life forever. Not because you want them to. But because they divide your life into two chapters.

Before. And after.

June 28, 2025, started like any other summer day. The world woke up as it always does. Birds sang. The sun rose. Somewhere, people laughed over breakfast, children played, and holidaymakers planned another beautiful day under a warm sky.
The sound of my phone woke me from my sleep. It was early—too early for an ordinary call. Before I even answered, something deep inside me knew that life was about to change.
I just didn't know how much. Or what. Or who. And then, without warning, everything changed.

Then came the words no brother should ever have to hear.
A few impossible words. Words that made no sense.
"She has passed away."
You were gone. Completely unexpected.

While on holiday, in your sleep, with every reason to believe there would be another sunrise waiting for you. From everything we knew, you were doing well. You were enjoying life. There had been no warning, no farewell, no final embrace.
Just silence.
A silence that has echoed through every day since.
People often say that life can change in an instant.
They're right.

One phone call separated my life into two chapters: the life where you were still here, and the life where I have had to learn to live without my sister.
We were never just only brother and sister. We were friends.
We shared our lives almost every single day. Whether it was a phone call, a message, a joke, advice, or simply checking in to ask how the other was doing, we were always there for one another.
That connection wasn't something we had to work at. It simply existed. It was part of us.

And suddenly... It was gone. Or at least, that's what it felt like.
How can someone simply disappear overnight? How can life be so incredibly fragile?
One moment you're making plans for tomorrow. The next, tomorrow never comes.

Your mind refuses to believe it. Surely there has been a mistake. Perhaps someone mixed up the names.
Maybe she'll call in a few minutes, laughing about the misunderstanding.
But the phone never rings. Silence becomes louder than words.

The hardest part of grief isn't only losing someone you love.
It's learning to live in a world that keeps moving while a part of your own world has stopped forever.
People go back to work. The seasons change. Birthdays come and go. Life continues.
But inside, there is an empty space that never existed before.
Grief is a strange companion. It doesn't arrive all at once. It comes in waves. Sometimes it whispers. Sometimes it crashes over you without mercy.
It appears in the smallest moments. A favorite song on the radio. A photograph hidden inside a drawer. A birthday that suddenly feels incomplete. A family gathering where one chair remains painfully empty.

Sometimes I still catch myself wanting to call you.
To tell you something funny. To ask your opinion. To share good news. For the briefest moment, everything feels normal again.
Then reality gently reminds me that there will never be another conversation.

People often say that time heals. Perhaps time softens the sharpest edges. But healing is not forgetting.
Some people leave footprints so deep within your heart that no amount of time can wash them away.
My sister was one of those people. She wasn't just family. She was part of my story. Part of my childhood.
Part of countless memories filled with laughter, arguments, celebrations, holidays, ordinary conversations and extraordinary moments that, at the time, seemed completely normal.

It's strange how ordinary moments become priceless after someone is gone.
If only we knew. We would hug a little longer. Talk a little more. Laugh a little louder. Say "I love you" one more time.
But life never tells us when the last goodbye has already happened. There is no preparation for losing someone who seemed perfectly healthy.
No warning. No chance to say farewell. No final conversation. Only questions that will never receive answers.

And yet... Love has a remarkable way of surviving.
It lives in memories. In stories.
In family traditions.
In the smile that suddenly reminds you of her.
In the habits you unknowingly copied.
In the kindness she gave to others.
In the lives she touched.

Death may end a life. It does not end love.
So today, when I think back to June 28, 2025, I do not only remember the day my world broke apart.
I remember the privilege of having had a sister whose absence is felt so deeply because her presence meant so much.
I carry sadness. But I also carry gratitude.
Because although her journey ended far too soon, the love she gave continues to travel with everyone who knew her.

Every butterfly I see makes me think of you.
Perhaps to someone else it's just another butterfly dancing through the summer air.
To me, it's something more. A quiet reminder. A gentle hello. A small whisper that somehow tells me you are still close.
Maybe that's only my heart searching for you. Or maybe, just maybe, it's your way of reminding me that love doesn't end when life does.

I hope you still watch over me from somewhere beyond what we can see. I hope you smile when our family laughs. I hope you know how deeply you are loved.
And I hope that, every now and then, you are still walking beside me as my guardian angel for whatever lies ahead.
Because there are days when I feel that a part of me died with you.
Not all of me. But a part that only you could ever understand. A part that belonged to us.

Until the day we meet again, I will look for you in every butterfly, in every warm breeze, in every quiet moment when the world slows down just enough for me to feel your presence.
Some stars disappear from the night sky. Yet somehow, their light keeps reaching us long after they are gone.
You are one of those stars. And you always will be.

I hope you know that you are still loved beyond measure. You always will be.

I love you Sis. Forever. And always.

Love, your little brother

Until we meet again....
